Introducing Interactive Science ©2011, the next-generation middle grades science program featuring an innovative write-in student edition.
You’ll see students’ eyes light up when you tell them “This is your book. You can write in it.” With Interactive Science, students become the lead authors by recording their understanding directly in the book. Your students will develop a true sense of ownership in the learning process as they read, write, draw, graph, and self-assess all in one place! Research has shown that direct interactions will help them truly connect to the content and maximize understanding.

Understanding by Design
How Interactive Science Employs This Revolutionary Approach
What’s the Big Idea with Understanding by Design and Interactive Science ©2011?

Co-developed by Grant Wiggins, Understanding by Design (UbD) is the groundbreaking approach to teaching by using a “backwards design” – beginning with the end in mind.

As a co-author of Interactive Science, Grant has incorporated UbD’s “backwards design” to help students understand the Big Ideas of science. An intriguing “big question” is asked at the start of each section and the following lessons are framed around solving the answer to the question. This framework encourages students to think like a scientist as they engage in activities to uncover the answer and transfer their knowledge throughout the lesson and onto the next.

Inquiry
Inquiry is Everywhere in Interactive Science
Interactive Science ©2011: More Inquiry Than Ever Before!

Containing more inquiry in more places, Interactive Science works for both the lab-oriented teacher or the textbook-focused teacher featuring a variety of hands-on and minds-on inquiry options to keep all your students engaged. Using the Teacher’s Lab Resource Manual, Material Kits, and a wide variety of blackline masters you’ll be able to provide opportunities for inquiry every day.

The comprehensive Teacher’s Lab Resource Manual features a variety of in-depth inquiry labs and leveled activities for students with varying abilities. This lab manual also allows the textbook-focused teacher to easily dip in and out of activities based on the amount of lab time they’ve allotted during the day.

The 5E Learning Cycle
Why the 5Es are Integral to our New Program
Designed to help students and teachers, this approach allows students to use and build on prior knowledge and experience to construct meaning and continually assess their understanding of a concept.

Interactive Science uses the 5E instructional model throughout each lesson of the program. Students now have frequent opportunities to Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, and Evaluate.

Engage students with a MyPlanet Diary story and have them answer related questions right in the book.
Explore concepts introduced in the story with a hands-on Lab Zone inquiry activity.
Explain concepts through the core text with key vocabulary words highlighted.
Elaborate with another hands-on LabZone activity that further develops understanding.
Evaluate understanding with “Assess Your Understanding”. Students summarize their understanding or go online to MyScienceCoach for more help.
